Annapurna Expedition 8091m

Annapurna 1 was first climbed by Herzog & Lachenal in 1950 standing at 8091m it is the 10th highest mountain in the world. The mountain is situated in North-Central Nepal and lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area. Annapurna is siuated north of Pokhara a popular tourist destination and it’s four summits with the entire massif of Annapurna form the northern barrier of Pokhara Valley. The main summit lies to the west of the Annapurna Sanctuary with glaciers on its western and north-western slopes. The glaciers drain into the deepest gorge in the world along the Kali Ghandaki river.

Despite being the first eight thousand meter peak to be climbed, Annapurna is still one of the least climbed of all the 8,000 meter peaks. The reason for this is that all the routes on the mountain pose severe difficulties for climbing. The Annapurnas are among the world’s most dangerous mountains to climb, the peaks are prone to avalanches and there has been high rate of fatality. There are huge ice cliffs and seracs to negotiate and it is difficult at times to know which way the ceracs are leaning. The ascent is made from the Kaligandaki Valley where there are some natural hot springs along the way.
